WhatsApp Marketing Automation for Apps in India: Setup, Costs and Journeys

Grid of dots with highlighted points inside a selection box, illustrating WhatsApp marketing automation in India

For most Indian users, WhatsApp is the app they check most often. That makes it one of the most effective channels for consumer apps and D2C brands, but only if it’s set up properly. Done badly, WhatsApp marketing gets your number blocked and your account quality downgraded.

This guide covers how WhatsApp marketing automation works, what you need to set it up, how pricing works, and the journeys worth automating first.

What WhatsApp marketing automation means

WhatsApp marketing automation means sending WhatsApp messages automatically based on what a customer does, such as signing up, abandoning a cart, missing a payment or going inactive, instead of sending manual broadcasts.

It runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform (often called the WhatsApp Business API), not the regular WhatsApp Business app. The app is fine for a small shop replying by hand. Automation, integrations and sending at scale need the Platform.

What you need to get started

  • A WhatsApp Business Platform account, set up directly with Meta or through a business solution provider. Many customer engagement platforms, such as MoEngage, CleverTap, WebEngage and Bloomreach, connect to it so WhatsApp runs alongside push, email and SMS.
  • A verified business and a dedicated phone number that isn’t already in use on regular WhatsApp.
  • Opt-in from customers. Only message people who have agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp, and record that consent.
  • Approved message templates. Messages you start, outside an open conversation, must use templates approved by Meta.

Understanding message templates

Templates fall into categories, and the category affects both approval and cost:

CategoryUsed forExamples
MarketingPromotions and re-engagementOffers, new arrivals, win-back messages
UtilityUpdates about something the customer didOrder confirmations, booking reminders, payment due
AuthenticationOne-time passwordsLogin and verification codes

Write utility templates for genuine updates, and don’t slip promotions into them. Meta reviews templates, and miscategorised ones can be rejected or reclassified.

How WhatsApp pricing works

Meta moved WhatsApp Business Platform pricing from per-conversation to per-message pricing on 1 July 2025. In summary:

  • Marketing templates are charged for every message delivered.
  • Utility and authentication templates are charged when sent outside an open customer service window.
  • When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens. Inside it, free-form replies and utility templates are free.
  • Click-to-WhatsApp ads open a 72-hour free entry window once you reply, during which messages to that user are free.

India has its own rates, and Meta has introduced billing in Indian rupees for eligible businesses. Check Meta’s current pricing page, or your provider’s rate card, for exact numbers, because rates change.

The practical takeaway: marketing messages cost money every time, so send them to the right segments. Encourage customers to message you first, because replies inside that window are much cheaper.

WhatsApp journeys worth automating first

  1. Welcome and onboarding: a short welcome after sign-up, with one clear next step.
  2. Cart or browse abandonment: a reminder of the item they viewed, sent once, with a direct link back.
  3. Order, booking and payment updates: utility messages customers actually want, which also build trust in your number.
  4. Win-back: a message for users who have gone quiet, ideally based on what they used before.
  5. Feedback and reviews: a short request after delivery or service, when the experience is fresh.

Start with two or three of these, measure them against a holdout group, and add more once they’re working. Our guide to customer retention strategies for consumer apps covers how WhatsApp fits alongside push, in-app and email.

WhatsApp vs SMS in India

SMS still matters for OTPs and for users who don’t respond on WhatsApp, but it comes with its own rules. Commercial SMS in India must follow TRAI’s DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) framework:

  • Entity registration of your business on an operator’s DLT portal
  • Header (sender ID) registration for the name that appears on messages
  • Content template registration, with every message matching an approved template
  • Whitelisting of the links and numbers used in templates
  • Chain binding with your SMS provider

Most apps use both: WhatsApp as the main channel for engagement, with SMS as a fallback for critical messages.

Consent and compliance

  • collect clear opt-in for WhatsApp, separate from your general terms
  • make it easy to opt out, and honour opt-outs across all tools
  • keep a record of when and how consent was given
  • review your setup against India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act with your legal team

Mistakes that get WhatsApp accounts restricted

  • messaging people who never opted in
  • sending too many marketing messages, which leads to blocks and reports
  • using marketing content inside utility templates
  • sending the same generic broadcast to everyone

Meta tracks quality signals such as blocks and reports. Poor quality can limit how many messages you can send, so relevance matters as much as reach.

Frequently asked questions

Is the WhatsApp Business app enough for marketing automation?

No. The WhatsApp Business app is designed for manual messaging from one phone. Automation, integrations with your app or CRM, and sending at scale need the WhatsApp Business Platform.

How much does WhatsApp marketing cost in India?

Since 1 July 2025, Meta charges per message. Marketing templates are charged per delivered message, while utility templates and replies inside a 24-hour customer service window are free. Check Meta’s current India rates or your provider’s rate card for exact prices.

Do I need DLT registration for WhatsApp?

No. DLT registration applies to commercial SMS in India. WhatsApp uses Meta’s own template approval process instead.

Can I send WhatsApp messages without opt-in?

You should only message customers who have opted in to WhatsApp messages from you. Messaging people without consent leads to blocks and reports, which can limit your account.
